  4. The Nursing Program’s request for gender credit for their entire program was denied on the grounds that the program deals with treatment of women and women’s illnesses but does not examine gender as a construct or object of analysis.  The vote was 0 in favor, 6 opposed, and 0 abstentions.
  5. The following writing courses were approved as indicated (by unanimous 9-0-0 vote):
    • COM 172, Survey of Media Communications (mid-level)

February 7, 2007

Present: Daryl Fair (Chair), Bob Anderson, Edward Conjura, Ellen Friedman, Mary Goldschmidt, Philip Sanders, Regina Sommese, Kathy Speaker,Glenn Steinberg, Martha Stella, Sharon Tharp, Donald Vandegrift, Piper Williams, and Karen Yan.

  1. Bob Anderson was congratulated for having been named “Outstanding First-Year Student Advocate” by the National Resource Center for the First-Year Experience and Students in Transition (and for having his title changed from Director of Liberal Learning to Assistant Provost for Liberal Learning and Academic Advising).
  2. The minutes of November 15th were approved as written, but with the addition of Martha Stella’s name to those present.
  3. Spring meeting dates were set for Feb. 7, 21; March 7, 21; April 4, 18; May 2, 16.
  4. Action on AFA 211, Painting I (requested for literary, visual, and performing arts) was deferred pending receipt of a clearer reading list, greater elaboration on connections between critical, historical, and conceptual understandings and the paintings students do and critique.  We need to know how that knowledge is generated.
  5. MGT 385, Business Ethics and Corporate Responsibility was approved for world views and ways of knowing.  The vote was 9 in favor, 0 opposed, and 0 abstaining.
  6. The following writing courses were approved as indicated (by unanimous 9-0-0 vote):
    • PHL 411, Philosophy of Science (Mid-level)
    • MUS 452, Music from 1850 to the Present Day (Mid-level)
    • MGT 451, Decision Making Seminar (Senior-level)
  7. The request by Nursing to count their undergraduate program as satisfying community engaged learning was approved unanimously.  Their request for Gender and global was deferred pending an opportunity to examine syllabi of relevant courses in the major.  We also noted that, according to current policy, only two civic responsibility categories may be satisfied by a course, program, or equivalent sustained experience.
  8. A request by the Department of Special Education to have the breadth requirements for all their undergraduate majors evaluated under Option A, Second Major, in a way exactly parallel to students in Elementary and Early Childhood Education, was approved unanimously by a vote of 9-0-0.
  9. Adjournment was at 3:55 pm.  The next meeting was set for February 21st at 1:30 in SB 131 [and subsequently postponed to March 7th].

November 15, 2007

Present: Daryl Fair (Chair), Edward Conjura, Mary Goldschmidt, Philip Sanders, Regina Sommese, Kathy Speaker, Glenn Steinberg, Martha Stella, Sharon Tharp, Donald Vandegrift, Piper Williams, and Karen Yan.

  1. The minutes for November 1, 2006, were approved with one correction: Edward Conjura reported on the quantitative reasoning advisory group (not Daryl Fair).
  2. ECE 102/ Multicultural Literature for Young Readers was unanimously approved for Literary, Visual, and Performing Arts.
  3. SOC 499/ Senior Seminar in Sociology and WGS 496/ Women’s Leadership and Social Change were both approved unanimously as senior-level writing-intensive courses.
  4. AAS 235/ African American Film was unanimously approved for Literary, Visual, and Performing Arts and for Race and Ethnicity.
  5. A decision on approval of Global for ELE 491/ Global Student Teaching was postponed.  Council members felt that it needed a syllabus or other documentation to show how students in the course would reflect on the global nature of their experience.  This documentation should show how the course would explicitly meet the learning goals for the global requirement.
  6. Adjournment was at 2:40 p.m. The next meeting was set for December 6th at 1:30 in SB 131.

Committee Memo

November 1, 2007

Present: Daryl Fair (Chair), Bob Anderson, Ed Conjura, Teegan Conti, Ellen Friedman, Mary Goldschmidt, Philip Sanders, Regina Sommese, Katherine Speaker, Glenn Steinberg, Martha Stella, Sharon Tharp, and Donald Vandegrift.

  1. The Minutes of October 18th were approved as submitted.
  2. Action on MGT 385, Business Ethics and Corporate Responsibility was tabled pending receipt of an explanatory memo more clearly linking course goals to liberal learning goals and outcomes for world views and ways of knowing.  Members of LLPC agreed to handle the matter via email if possible.
  3. Glenn Steinberg was added as a non-voting, ex-officio member whose duties would be to take minutes when Bob Anderson is unable to attend meetings.  Glenn would have full privileges aside from voting rights.
  4. The following writing intensive courses were approved as indicated:
    • NUR 328, Research for Health Related Sciences (Mid-Level — added to the existing behavioral, social, and cultural perspectives approval)
    • SPE 214, Exploring Classroom Communities (Mid-Level)
    • BUS 498, Seminar in Interdisciplinary Business Issues (Senior-Level)
    • MKT 440, International Marketing Management (Senior-Level)
    • MKT 450, Marketing Management (Senior-Level)
  5. HIS 358, Colonial Latin America was approved as satisfying the race and ethnicity civic responsibility category.  The vote was 9 in favor, 0 opposed, 0 abstaining.  The course was previously approved for social change in historical perspectives.
  6. Action on PSY 373, Love and Sex was tabled pending receipt of an explanatory memo more clearly linking course goals to liberal learning goals for the gender civic responsibility requirement.  Members of LLPC agreed to handle the matter via email if possible.
  7. MUS 246, Music in Global Perspective was approved as satisfying the literary, visual, and performing arts and global categories.  The vote was 8 in favor, 0 opposed, 0 abstaining.
  8. Ed Conjura reported that the quantitative reasoning advisory group will soon be providing a set of guidelines and developing an assessment plan.  Membership is proposed as including Dan Phillips, Ursula Wolz, Dave Reimer, and Ed Conjura, among others.
  9. A brief discussion of implementation difficulties of the second stage in the developmental community engaged learning program resulted in an informal decision to defer action on the possible exempting of that requirement for entering first-year students from Fall 2006.  The problem is if we exempt those students from the requirement, there will be diminished incentive for faculty members to develop appropriate courses.  If we do not exempt them, then there may not be enough courses anyway (and we would need to exempt them later).  We will return to the question next fall.
  10. Adjournment was at 2:50 pm.  The next meeting was set for November 15th at 1:30 in SB 131.

October 18, 2007

Present: Daryl Fair (Chair), Teegan Conti, Ellen Friedman, Mary Goldschmidt, Philip Sanders, Regina Sommese, Katherine Speaker, Glenn Steinberg, Martha Stella, Donald Vandegrift, Piper Williams, and Karen Yan.

  1. The Minutes for September 20, 2006, were approved with two corrections: Teegan Conti was present at the September 20 meeting, and the meeting was adjourned at 2:50 p.m.
  2. The meeting dates for AY 2006-2007 were approved.
  3. The committee voted to give final approval for writing-intensive credit to CSC 399, Experiential Learning Opportunities in Psychology, PSY 470, and PHY 493.
  4. The committee voted to allow incoming first-year students in Fall 2006 to satisfy the first component of their community engaged learning requirement by completing one of the “Potential First Year Experience Tracks” described by Pat Donohue at the September 20 meeting of the LLPC.
  5. The committee discussed whether the second, more advanced component of the community engaged learning requirement should be waived for incoming students again this year.  In the end, the committee empowered the chair to send a memo outlining its proposals and concerns to the Provost.

Committee Memo

September 20, 2007

Present:  Daryl Fair (Chair), Bob Anderson, Ed Conjura, Ellen Friedman, Philip Sanders, Regina Sommese, Kathryn Speaker, Martha Stella, Susan Tharp, Piper Williams, Brittany Aydelotte (Guest), Patrick Donahue (Guest), Beth Paul (guest – briefly)

  1. Daryl Fair was elected Chair for 2006-2007.
  2. Bob Anderson was elected Vice-Chair and Secretary for 2006-2007.
  3. The Minutes of May 17th were approved as distributed.
  4. Pat Donahue, newly appointed director for community engaged learning, and Brittany Aydelotte, a Bonner Scholar student, explained the reconstituted first year community engaged learning program.  Comprising a Welcome Week service experience, some FSP sections, on- and off-campus community learning days, and community partner or Bonner teams, the highlight of the plan involves a dozen or so Community Learning days.  These experiences include pre-service activities, the service itself, a mechanism to generate reflection, and opportunities for ‘next steps.’  LLPC members will be asked to approve the plans as completing community engaged learning requirements for all entering first year students in Fall 2006.  While residence hall floors will be used as the primary means of organizing students, provisions will be made for commuters.  Beth Paul described the plans as ‘providing a rich learning experience.’  Brittany Aydelotte indicated that there is much excitement among Bonner Scholars over these plans.  Bob Anderson distributed a list of Civic Responsibilities goals and outcomes, including, of course, those for community engaged learning.
  5. Adjournment was at 3:50 pm, with the next meeting set for October 18th (because of the Community Learning Day activities scheduled for the afternoon of October 4th.)
