November 5, 2008

Present:  Mary Biggs, Mary Goldschmidt, Piper Kendrix-Williams, Monisha Pulimood, Philip Sanders, and Glenn Steinberg.

  1. Approving the minutes for October 15 was tabled because of the lack of a quorum.
  2. The committee talked about creating a form, grid, or matrix for faculty to use when submitting courses for Liberal Learning credit.  The discussion concluded that a form similar to that used in the Computer Science department would be helpful (sample attached).  In addition, the Liberal Learning website should in future feature an updated instruction sheet for faculty who propose courses for Liberal Learning credit, instructing them to submit
    • the new form(s) appropriate for each Liberal Learning category for which credit is requested and
    • a sample syllabus (without course cover sheet).
  3. The committee discussed the possibility of rationalizing Liberal Learning courses to eliminate petitioning for Liberal Learning credit by individual students.  The committee questioned the consistency of the current system, whereby one student in a course may receive Liberal Learning credit (by petitioning for such credit) but another student in the same course does not receive the same credit.  The committee discussed whether departments should be approached about putting forward relevant courses for Liberal Learning credit that currently do not carry such credit (except by petition of individual students).
  4. The committee also discussed strategies for encouraging interdisciplinary concentrations and decided that a meeting with Rick Kamber might be useful in the future.
  5. Adjournment was at 2:30 PM
