Spring 2003

Liberal Learning Advisory Council Minutes Spring 2003

Minutes Arranged by Date

April 23, 2003

Present: D. Kobrynowicz (Chair), S. Albertine, R. Anderson (Secretary), W. Behre, R. Fangboner, J. Gray, L. McCauley, A. Quinton

  1. The Minutes of April 9th were approved as submitted.
  2. Multicultural New York: The City from its Beginnings to the Present, a proposal for a First Year Seminar submitted by Matthew Winkel, was approved with the understanding that the research essay be clarified and that feedback on written assignments be provided so as to guide students in their rewriting efforts.  Approval was by a vote of 7 to 0 with one abstention.
  3. An initial proposal for a First Year Seminar course entitled Community Engagement in Response to Poverty and Homelessness was submitted by Stuart Carroll and Nino Scarpati for comments and direction.  Comments included a recommendation that ‘service learning’ be replaced with ‘community based research’ or ‘community based learning,’ that solutions for as well as causes and effects of poverty be investigated, that a complete syllabus with cover sheet is needed for final approval, that whether the community experience is service or site based needs clarification, that it need only be cross-cultural rather than international in scope, and that the title should be more imaginative.  Additionally some members thought the course needed a more clearly defined theoretical approach to globalization and the understanding of poverty.  In general members received the preliminary proposal in a positive manner.  Action was neither asked for nor taken.
  4. Adjournment was at 4:30 with the understanding that there would be no subsequent meetings until the fall.  Happy summer.
