Feedback on the First Draft of Degree-Level Goals

November 11, 2016 – December 2, 2016

Campus-wide feedback was obtained from the following groups:  Student Affairs, Admissions, The Curriculum Team*; Deans Council; President; Faculty Senate; Staff Senate; Student Government; Open Forums(3), as well as direct email communications from faculty who attended the forums

* Coordinators and Directors of the cross-College academic programs (FSP, Honors, Writing, Community Engagement, Global Engagement, Center for American Languages & Culture, Faculty-Student Collaboration, Summer Reading Program)

The consensus of each of the feedback sessions was that degree-level goals  should be pursued, but a number of significant concerns were expressed, including:

  • There is a recurrent concern that it will not be possible to attain the level of proficiency implied by some of the roles, especially “leader” and “expert.” Persons were viewing these roles as endpoints rather than at some advanced, but still developing, level of skill.
  • Faculty were unable to identify what they currently do in the classroom as being embodied in the conceptual framework.
  • The importance of the cross-cutting skills (communication, ethical reasoning, critical thinking) is diminished by placing them in the introduction.
  • There were several suggestion for adding abilities (e.g., active listening, consideration of greater good, intercultural or global, self-awareness/resilience, empathy, teacher).
  • Faculty were not able to determine what changes might occur with the implementation of these goals, as we did not provide any indication of what changes in the curricular structure might follow. There were concerns about whether some of the current requirements might disappear and what impact such changes might have on departments.
